4th and Final riding day exploration of the Port Arthur Penninsula
We were up at 8:15am. It wasn't raining but was cloudy and windy.
Briarpaddock Beach
On the way to Remarkable Cave, we passed a few beaches like this one. Briarpaddock Beach is an example of the extraordinary beauty that
ordinary people can afford in this very out-of-the-way place.
Remarkable Cave
First way-point was heading south to see Remarkable Cave. It's remarkable because you look though an open gap in the cliff through an opening shaped like Tasmania.
Lime Kiln State Reserve
Then at 11:35am we headed north on B37 thru Nubeena where we bought some gas before heading way up to the tip of Lime Kiln Bay State Reserve.
It was good that we got gas here as it lasted all day until the final gas stop before we turned the bike in to TMTR.
The end of this road C341 was 5km of packed dirt leading all the way to Lagoon Beach. 2km from end of pavement to the reserve then 3 more km to Lagoon Beach.
Kathi just loves to sit on deserted crescent beaches, even more than on the back of a bike on a dirt road for 5km
Taranna / FishLips fail / Blue Seal Cafe
Cool RV parked at the Unzoo
After sitting on the beach for a while, we headed back to Taranna where we talked to the folks at the Unzoo.
They were scheduled to feed the Tasmanian devils at 1:30pm, so we tried to run out to get some breakfast/lunch.
Our hope was to eat at “Fish Lips” but it had closed, reputadly 10 years ago!
Then we tried Rosedale Homestead (closed) where at 12:50pm we met up with Crocodile Dundee's brother. He had a camel. He told us Fish Lips closed ~10 years ago, then sent us to DoLishious, but that was too far about 15 minutes drive each way and we had only about 30 minutes, so we stopped at the Blue Seal Cafe instead. At 1:05pm we had a very rushed snack at Blue Seal of scallop pie, blueberry scone, and an excellent latte coffee in Eaglehawk Neck. Then we raced back to the Unzoo for the 1:30 Devil presentation.
Blue Seal Cafe
The Unzoo in Taranna
At the Unzoo in Taranna, we fed rosella and kangaroos, saw two Devils (sisters) in a den. When one heard people she'd come out as if she thought she'd get fed. Before that, the old devil was fed a haunch of Wallaby. The sounds of bones cracking was “interesting”.
Blowhole
At about 4pm we ran off to Blow Hole, then Tesselated pavement in Pirates Bay Beach.
We told Phil we’d be back at 5:30 and he asked for 5:00. Chris raced back doing a lot of passing to get us there.
Near Doo Town, home of Doolischious, which we missed earlier in the afternoon, we returned to see Another Blow Hole
We were getting rushed for time so we missed walking to the nearby Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen sites. Nevertheless, we were happier to have spent the time earlier in the day riding up to Lime Kiln.
Tessellated Pavement Beach
Our last scenic stop was Tessellated Pavement Beach right in Eaglehawk Neck on our way back to TMTR. Super interesting rectangular rock formations.
Returning the trusty Tiger
We topped up the gas tank and checked the bike in at 5:18pm
and then Phil gave us a ride back to Quest hotel in Hobart.
Dinner
Kathi wanted some down time, so instead of going out, we ate the chicken soup we’d been carrying for 2 days.
But after an hour of rest time, we decided to go for a walk to a Spanish restaraunt, Espana Dining & Bar near Quest in Hobart.
