Scooter rental

A big part of the motivation for visiting Vienna comes from Tomaž Žust our guide from our May 2022 Adriatic Rivera Tour.
He said Vienna is his favorite city in Europe. And, we had just done Edelweiss Scooters in Croatia tour and were considering their Scooters in Vienna tour (since discontinued).
Chris researched scooter rental and found Cash4Car which seemed to have lots of Vespas of various models, good reviews, and excellent prices compared to renting Vespas from Edelweiss.

Early Sunday morning, at 10:30am, after enjoying the breakfast buffet, Chris walked ~2.5 km to Cash4Car to rent a scooter. Turns out they only had 125cc, no LX250, and just two beat up examples. Price at €50 was a LOT higher than the advertized €19 with insurance, etc.

Turns out the business has been taken over by some Russians who seem to be milking it while the inventory runs down. Anyway, my advice is stay away from this place. I don't know where you can rent a decent scooter in Vienna, shame.

Got the scooter and rode back to pick up Kathi.

Ride out to Hagenbachklamm

Drove out to the Raptor sanctuary Greifvogelzuchtstation Hagenbachklamm.
Hagenbachklamm is a national forest and Greifvogelzuchtstation is "bird of prey breeding station"

Interesting, random advertizing billboard in the middle of Hagenbachklamm.

Greifvogelzuchtstation Raptor Sanctuary

This raptor sanctuary and breeding station started in 1976 by Gerhard Kropf and friends. They wanted to support the sport/tradition of falconry without taking birds from the wild. It opened to the public in 1977. The current station manager Erwin Größinger joined the team in 1983.

The station keeps lugger falcon, lanner falcon, peregrine falcon, saker falcon and kestrel, augur buzzard, long-tailed buzzard, jackal buzzard, desert buzzard and rough-legged hawk, red kite, golden eagle, steppe eagle, lesser spotted eagle, imperial eagle, wedge-tailed eagle, bald eagle, fish eagle, griffon vultures, snow vultures, Andean condor, snowy owl, Asian and European eagle owl, great horned owl, spotted owl and great gray owls.

Individual birds are exchanged with other institutions worldwide. The station has enjoyed a high success rate breeding birds such as the Australian wedge-tailed eagle. Breeding eagles successfully requires a preparation period of 10 years and more.

The purpose of this facility today is to breed the animals, not only to preserve the species (releases back into the wild), but also to show visitors the birds of prey up close and explain their needs and way of life.

Riding back to Vienna

Danube Tower (Donauturm) at Donaupark

Scooter crapped out

The scooter was beginning to miss. Then it stalled in traffic multiple times. Then it refused to start. Its performance was going downhill fast. I'm glad it waited until we were back in town to fail. I don't know what I would have done in the mountains. I called the company and they sent a van out with a replacement, but they said the replacement had problems. I told them to just take it back and we'd walk back. Saved me returning it the next morning.

Stop in downtown at Ilora Struberl - Hungarian restaurant - for snack

Kathi was starving so she got cabbage soup, bean soup, stuffed peppers, and soda zitrone. Some of that for Chris. By the time he got there, some leftovers were still availble.

An interesting scooter, Honda SH300i

Not available in the USA :(

Dinner at a Greek Restaurant with Joe and Bridget

We went walking to find an Indian restaurant that Bridget liked, but it was closed.
Ended up at a nearby Greek restaurant. Kathi had suvlaki and spanakopita, Chris had a salad, and Greek grape leaves with meat.
